YATTA shares self-directed 'Put Your Faith in God' video
“an album as haunting as it is funny, the sonic document of someone looking for something and finding themselves in the process.” – ANDREW RYCE, FUTURE PROOFING
“PALM WINE is objectively different from the releases that have come before, brimming with new energy and a restored sense of self.” – A CLOSER LISTEN
“YATTA’s PALM WINE is a remarkably distinct and genre-evading piece of work.” – BANDCAMP
Multidisciplinary artist YATTA –aka ricky sallay zoker – shares the official self-directed music video for ‘Put Your Faith in God’ on 28 March, a standout track from their critically acclaimed 2024 album ‘PALM WINE’. The release comes as YATTA gears up for a series of live performances, including their first full-band show on April 2 at Pioneer Works.
A Sierra Leonean-American vocalist, producer, and composer, YATTA is celebrated for their boundary-pushing sound, fusing electronic textures, looped vocals, and improvisational storytelling. Their work has been featured at MoMA PS1, The Kitchen, Sonic Acts Festival, and New Forms Festival, and they have shared stages with artists like Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Cardi B, Laraaji, L’Rain, and The Sun Ra Arkestra. A Bard MFA graduate and former artist-in-residence at Pioneer Works and Flux Factory, YATTA continues to redefine experimental music.
A standout track, ‘Put Your Faith in God’ is a mesmerizing blend of heavy percussion, spoken-word reflections, and controlled chaos. Bandcamp described it as “a wonderfully unpredictable piece of deconstructed electronic pop.” YATTA’s self-directed video brings the track’s energy to life, offering a striking visual counterpart to its layered sound.
On the video, YATTA explains: “This video is an Easter egg from my previous music video, capturing suburban aunty evangelism—think Jan Crouch on Trinity Broadcasting Network. I was raised between Christianity and Islam. My devout grandmother prayed at 3 a.m., always singing hymns. Her raw, wavering voice taught me how to sing. The Christianity I knew was abolitionist, rooted in forgiveness and radical thought. Faith, to me, is a personal, often doubtful conversation with God—full of humor and play.”
Their latest album ‘PALM WINE’ draws inspiration from West African Palm Wine music—pioneered by YATTA’s granduncle S.E. Rogie—while expanding into a rich, genre-defying sonic landscape. Bandcamp Daily praised it as “remarkably distinct and genre-evading” after receiving Album of The Day, The Wire highlighted its “smooth juxtaposition of folk, country, stadium rock, and West African pop.” With further support from Document Journal, Future Proofing and The Noise Narrative.
Marking a shift from the poetic noise of YATTA’s earlier work, PALM WINE retains an experimental spirit while embracing a more expansive, pop-inflected sound. It is the product of years of travel, self-reckoning, solitude, and love—alchemized into a joyful homecoming, a reconnection with God, and a newfound clarity. More than just an album, PALM WINE feels like the work of an artist fully in control of their own path.
YATTA will bring PALM WINE to life on stage with a series of performances:
May 20 – Performance at Performance Space (curated by Moor Mother)
For the first time, PALM WINE will be available on vinyl, in collaboration with GENG PTP, with pre-orders now open.
