Whitney Bjerken returns with defiant new single ‘i said that i wasn’t… (i was)’

A refreshing shift from the darker emotions of her usual work, alt-pop riser Whitney Bjerken embraces self-acceptance on her new track, ‘i said that i wasn’t… (i was)’. Combining playful lyricism with grungy, riff-heavy production, it sees the singer-songwriter defy expectations as she revels in her genre-bending sound. As the follow-up to September’s single ‘fake’, the energetic cut continues a gleaming entrance to a new chapter for Whitney.

Stingingly honest and emotionally aware, ‘i said that i wasn’t… (i was)’ hones the compelling storytelling that has acted as a guiding thread since Whitney’s early work. Musing over conflicting emotions, it weaves touches of self-assurance amidst vulnerable moments of introspection. Tied together by the Atlanta-based artist’s captivating vocal delivery, the track brims with maturity and growth.

“‘i said that i wasn't... (i was)’ is about being confused about your feelings toward a person. I'm someone who usually has very strong opinions about someone pretty quickly but, this song is about the times when I may have made my mind up a little too soon. I think being wrong is such a huge part of being a human and I wanted to make a song embracing that!” Whitney explains.

With its main riff being conceived in her Georgia home, ‘i said that i wasn’t… (i was)’ quickly developed into some of Whitney’s most explorative and developed work to date. After bringing the demo to a session with her producer Alex DeVor in Nashville, the track built into a kaleidoscopic melting pot of driving guitars and insistent production, overlaid by her soaring, emotion-drenched vocals.

‘i said that i wasn’t… (i was)’ arrives a short few months after Whitney’s highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Mental Gymnastics’. Having amassed almost 700,000 collective streams and glowing critical appraise, the 7-track project fast secured her as one to watch. Appraised by Too Much Love Magazine as “more than just a musical endeavor: it is a cathartic journey of self-discovery and empowerment.", the body of work served as a strong statement of intent from the rising star.

At just 19-years-old, Whitney has already gained an impressive following and avid fanbase. With YouTube videos documenting her earliest days of songwriting, alongside her endeavours as a competitive gymnast, the multi-talent was shot into the limelight at an early age. Now turning her attention to conquering the pop scene, Whitney is set for a promising trajectory ahead.
