Though his name might be synonymous with a summer gone by, Wes Nelson is redefining himself as a breakthrough talent to watch with every top 10 track he releases. Ahead of his highly anticipated UK and Ireland tour, I sat down with Wes to learn more about how he’s navigated this impressive trajectory from Love Island legend to singing sensation.

After being catapulted into the public eye in 2018, Wes went against the grain of the typical reality star career path and instead threw himself into the studio to hone his skills as a musician, explore his sound, and define his identity as an artist. ‘I’ve always put a priority on learning as much as I can to be a better artist’ Wes explains, ‘by doing that I feel so much more connected to my art. I’m a massive perfectionist, and I take huge pride in my work.’

As he stepped out of the villa to a newfound notability, Wes recognised that this would act as both a blessing and a curse. ‘I knew that to come out as a music artist was going to be a double-edged sword. It was always going to be a struggle to go on a reality show and then be taken seriously as a music artist. I began to release music, let people think whatever they want and let the numbers do the talking. That got me to where I am now…Love Island was a crucial part to building up my confidence for what would follow.’ Now, Wes is proving that his bravery has paid off, with his music career growing bigger with every track he writes.

Along with using his platform to connect with fans old and new, Wes skilfully leveraged his connections across the industry to gather as many new writing opportunities as possible to keep his focus sharp. From working with Clean Bandit to Craig David, Wes tells me that he’s ‘constantly songwriting to sharpen the tools’, with the most recent example being his breakthrough single Barcelona, written in collaboration with production duo heavyweight, Billen Ted which was released in August.I've known the boys for a few years now, and we just have the best banter, which really helps when writing a banger,’ Wes says; ‘it’s a massive thing when you’re doing a collaboration to get along with the artists… the stars aligned on this one, it felt special.’

Amassing over a quarter of a million streams so far and signalling his first release of his signing with Sony Music, Barcelona signals a pivotal moment in Wes’s career that ‘feels like a dream’. Reminiscing on his journey so far, Wes says ‘it all happened so fast, sometimes you’ve got to step back and realise what is actually happening. It’s too fast to slow down and I like the pace of it all, but it is crazy!’

Wes’s partnership with collaborator turned close friend Craig David is perhaps the best example of his evolution as an artist. From watching Craig on Top of the Pops in his parents living room, to teaming up with him for their chart-topping single Abracadabra, Wes explains Craig’s massive inspiration and influence on his career. ‘There’s a lot of people that you meet in this industry but there's not many that you can really call a true friend. Craig has been there, done it, and is still doing it now. He’s got such a long-standing career in the UK music scene, his vocals live and in recording are second to none – he’s the best vocalist I’ve been in with… Craig was the number one guy I looked up to, it’s crazy to be working with him now and I’m super grateful.’

The pair’s tight bond led to them performing Abracadabra in the Love Island All Stars villa this year which was a cyclical moment for Wes. ‘It was the best way to tie everything together, and the last hoorah for me to go back in and perform with Craig’ Wes explains, ‘my relationship with the show is really good, but after going in, it made me realise it was something I was so much more comfortable with when I was a lot younger. I couldn’t even imagine doing a dating show now!’

Now, Wes turns his attention to his upcoming Tour which kicks off in Dublin on 12th November. This time around, Wes will be touring with a full live band, enlisting the help of talented guitarist and keyboard player Nate Notes to ‘bring these banging rock guitars to give that live nostalgic feeling to the show. It’s sounding like stadium music I’m not gonna lie!’ Wes explains that ‘this is much bigger than just singing to a track with a DJ. This time every single song has been remade to have a live adaptation just for the shows to bring next level energy to every audience’. From sharing the stage with Craig, to supporting N-Dubz and now preparing for his own headline tour, Wes is focused on ‘finding my identity as an artist and performer. It’s all happening, it’s exciting.’

As for plans for new music? Wes has got that covered too: ‘I feel like I’ve got enough songs written to make 10 albums!’ Wes teases, ‘I’m not trying to pigeonhole myself and my sound, as I want my music to blur the lines between Pop, RnB and Dance. My vocals are RnB, but I love moody yet fast paced, enjoyable songs. It’s hard to explain it, so you’re gonna have to wait til you hear it on tour! We’re trying to create a new lane here, that’s true artistry to me.’

It's clear that Wes Nelson has put all his eggs in one basket to make this his most ambitious tour yet. With this and new music on the horizon, he is a true example of how harnessing talent, putting in the hard graft and staying committed to your goals will ultimately pay off.  Wes’s UK and Ireland Tour, My Own Way, starts in November, with tickets on sale now.
