Soulful sensation Liv East fuses her creativity with deep intention and authenticity for debut solo EP LVE1

By Ellie Carter

LVE1 is the debut solo EP from soulful sensation, Liv East. Fusing her creativity with deep intention and authenticity, LVE1 is a labour of love that she has given her whole heart to; ‘I’ve spent the past few years honing my craft and diving deep into every aspect of music creation - so exec producing this project and being the sole vocal engineer was a natural evolution on the path of me getting closer to my art and my creations’.

Inspired by her love for old Disco and Soul records, and paired with contemporary production and Liv’s signature velvety vocals, LVE1 treads the tricky line of feeling both modern and timeless with ease. This timelessness is felt through Liv’s songwriting as well, as she tracks the arc of a romantic relationship that no doubt resonates with almost every listener. Of LVE UNLIMITED, Liv recounts looking to ballads that have stood the test of time for inspiration; ‘the lyrics give nods to classic love songs ‘Killing Me Softly’ and ‘Wicked Games’, adding to that timeless feel I wanted to create with the whole project’.

Encapsulating both Liv’s journey and sonic creativity, The EP is immersive and beautiful in its composition, message, and production, with intense attention to detail resonating through every element. LVE1 reveals a part of Liv that we haven’t seen before, and one we are so lucky to witness unfold.

I caught up with Liv at her studio in East London to dive deeper into her latest release.

What does the release of LVE1 represent to you?

The word that comes to mind is release. Exactly that. I’m releasing such a precious part of my soul and my art into the world. I’ve wanted to release a project for years but for numerous reasons the time hasn’t felt right but it’s different now. This whole year I’ve been in flow, and I feel like I’ve been supported to finally release and reveal more of my art.

How has the experience of writing and curating this project shaped you as an artist?

It’s taught me a lot about what it takes to put out quality, authentic music independently. For me, the creation of the music is easy - It’s always been easy and I’m in flow when I’m writing and recording. But the actual curation and release of a project takes patience, quality control, an understanding of the business side of things, and an understanding of marketing. I’ve learnt a lot this year about releasing music and I’ve only grown wiser because of it.

Having followed you for several years now, I know how important intention and authenticity is to you in your life and music. How has this manifested itself in the creation of LVE1?

I’ve just stayed true to myself and exactly what was in my heart. I’ve let my music journey unfold naturally and authentically - never tried to jump on a trend or do something for numbers. What I’m putting forward is really just a reflection of what’s going on within. I suppose because of the dance tracks that I’ve done which have done well, I could have been tempted or calculated in making sure there was a big dance banger on this record so that it would do numbers but there isn’t one dance track on here. It’s a soul record through and through - because that’s what was in my heart. It’s real and it’s pure, and for me that’s the whole point of being an artist.

We can hear a huge array of references from Disco and Soul to Funk and classic ballads across LVE 1. What is about these genres that resonate with you and inform your song writing?

I think it’s something about the sonics - all of those genres had their heyday in the 60s, 70s & 80s. A time when bands were in the room together recording on tape with analogue gear. There’s realness and soul in the sound. I resonate with THAT.

Can you talk to us about how you came to the name LVE1?

It’s an abbreviation of Liv East and Love. I wanted a name that was more of an imprint that could be used across a number of projects. Something simple, a little mysterious but also symbolic of what I stand for.

Where do you envisage your listeners enjoying LVE1?

Good question!! During a morning meditation, a yoga class, watching the sunset at a beach party, in their bedroom late at night with their headphones in, on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

What do you want your fans to take from the record?

That you don’t have to be anyone other than yourself in this world. Follow your soul, follow your dreams, slowly and quietly down the path and have faith that you’re going in the right direction. I want them to listen to the project and be moved to soften and strengthen all at the same time. Also I want them to feel close to me. Close to something warm that exists in the ether.

What is next for Liv East!?

More music, of course, more travelling, more love, more self discovery and connection.

LVE1 is streaming everywhere now, including a limited vinyl run available at selected retailers.
