Speaking on the story behind the single, Peri Rae shares; ‘‘i should be happy’ is a song about the things that haunt us. The guilt of not being able to enjoy the good moments when you can’t seem to shake off the bad. It’s about trauma coming back to you, making you wish you were someone else, somewhere else. It’s also ultimately a message of hope, as no matter how hard it gets, there is a light at the end of the story, like there is lyrically at the end of the song.”
