Merryn Jeann releases the beautiful 'Subconscious Love Connections'
Merryn Jeann returns with her beautiful new single ‘SUBCONSCIOUS LOVE CONNECTIONS’ alongside another impressive, self directed music video. The accompanying visual was shot at the local gas station with friends whom the song was written about.
Rich in a blissful soundscape, the new single arrives as the final teaser ahead of her first full length album ‘DOG BEACH’, due for release on the 23rd of February via her co-founded label Rescue + Return Records.
SUBCONSCIOUS LOVE CONNECTIONS was written during the lockdown in Paris, where Merryn was based at the time. The inspiration for the track was sparked after receiving a voice message from a dear friend back in Australia. True friendship prevails distance and SUBCONSCIOUS LOVE CONNECTIONS’ is a moment to cherish those magical and defiant connections. Sharing more Merryn explained: ‘This song is about the love we feel because we have love to feel. My friend was reaching out to myself and another best friend, whimpering over the phone that she wished we were with her as her home was flooded in and everyone was in a moody rain mood so weren’t answering their phones/ weren’t close enough with her to be contacted in this moment of sadness and hopelessness. The night leading up to this text, I had dreamt of this same friend and wasn’t surprised to receive her message.’
SUBCONSCIOUS LOVE CONNECTIONS is the follow up to ME B4 U, which came out back in November. Born from the complexities of navigating romance, ME B4 U was a gorgeous display of self-discovery and mindfulness. The release was well received by music media, scooping support from the likes of Under the Radar, God is In TheTV and Clash who labeled Merryn ‘a rising pop force.’
Merryn Jeann is fast building a reputation as an impressive multidimensional artist. She thrives in exploring both visual and sonic arts. Her sound embodies a world of creativity that transports listeners into her one of a kind universe.
The first single to be revealed from Merryn’s upcoming album was NUN AT THE AIRPORT, which arrived back in September. The intoxicating track was inspired by a particularly surreal moment during the pandemic she was a witness to, from her quarantine hotel in Frankfurt airport. Sharing more Merryn explained: My room was looking over the foyer which was even larger and more expansive than usual, in its dystopian emptiness, its lack of bustle and chaos.
One morning I saw a gaggle of nuns walking about the foyer, with their suitcases trailing behind them up the escalator. The scene of them ascending in this surreal setting gave me the idea for this story- a nun is feeling disconnected and far from God/the spirits, so she decides the only way to understand what's happening is to talk to god so she hops in a plane to physically get closer to them/her/him/it.
The release of NUN AT THE AIRPORT marked a new and exciting chapter for emerging artist Merryn Jeann, Metal Magazine said her sound ‘defies categorisation’ and is both ‘intriguing and seductive’. All signs indicate that the upcoming album will be a diverse, impressive and effortlessly unique body of work that is produced by the exceptionally talented Rob Ellis (best known for his work with PJ Harvey).

Merryn Jeann is a Naarm/Melbourne and Bundjalung Country/Byron Bay Shire based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She has crafted a genre-bending, dreamy world of soundscapes that bear a magnetic, musical wisdom. Sitting somewhere between Caroline Polachek, Cat Power, Weyes Blood, Feist, and Kelsey Lu, Merryn Jeann’s sound is fueled by authenticity. Her raw and honest self packaged into intricate and reflective morsels, many of which are yet to be revealed.
After living in Paris for many years, Merryn recently returned to Australia to study Fine Arts in Melbourne, however after one semester, music drew her back in and became her primary focus once more. Through this short though profound experience at school, Merryn took the opportunity to truly recognise the visual arts angle as a lens to experience, see and understand her music making process and performance, to deepen this pre-existing relationship as demonstrated in her self directed, somewhat experimental videos (under the alias MAAMDAAM) and captivating live shows.
DOG BEACH, due for release February 23rd will be the follow-up to Merryn’s self-titled debut mini LP, which came out in 2019. Since its release, Merryn has released a stunning live EP ‘Live at Le Trabendo’ and nurtured many successful collaborations including ‘Shade Under Your Hands’, which came as a beautiful album from OOSO; a music and artist collective founded by herself, Chris Hill and Kyson.
Now settling into her new phase as a solo artist, you’ll find a profound storytelling and experimentation in her new music, aligning with sounds from the 90s and early 2000s. Merryn Jeann is a diverse artist, proudly free from the confines of a box.
