MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS:
HOW TO COPE DURING QUARANTINE

By Tariq Walsh

Staying disciplined, focused, and determined has been the goal for the entirety of the covid-19 quarantine. I now have to deal with being home with parents and siblings. Previously being away at school has giving me the ability to runaway from my home issues and created another world for myself. Due to the virus I now have to face the issues I ran away from. It’s tough.

Through reading and being more vocal, I am able to solve my problems and even find comfort in the new lifestyle I lead. I’ve learned to ask questions, listen, actually LISTEN, and have some sympathy for the people around me. Keeping a level head is very important. I focus on the things I’m fortunate to have rather then living in a negative space.

In order to protect your peace it is sometimes necessary to isolate yourself. Too many thoughts can cloud your judgement. That’s why I like books. I can read and educate myself at my own pace and reflect on whether or not the information is something worth applying to my life. Listening to people who are also going a little crazy may make matters worse so I find ways around going insane.

Maintaining a normal schedule:

  • Waking up at a reasonable time (typically 9AM or before 12PM)

  • Making myself breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Exercising either in the morning or afternoon

  • Reading self help books

  • Calling my friends/family

  • Research or actively doing things I enjoy.

Things might be different but change is something we will forever face. We can either stay where we are or move with the times. I know what I’m doing. Do you?
