Based in Dublin, Holly Munro is a songwriter who creates electronic infused folk-pop songs. In an unusual position, Holly is releasing her debut EP with an already extensive touring schedule under her belt. Her distinctive sound has earned her appearances at festivals like All Together Now and Electric Picnic, as well as opening slots for acts such as her siblings Hudson Taylor. She has also toured the U.S. as a backing vocalist for global star Hozier. This great family connection and touring schedule has led her to playing shows across Canada, UK, and Europe, crafting a legacy for herself before even releasing a song under this name. With this single also comes an artistic video shot in Ireland. Holly’s education, consisting of a degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from her time spent studying in The Netherlands and a Diploma in Augmented and Virtual Reality, has led her on a creative path where the visual elements she puts out are as important as the music itself.
This EP itself is a big milestone for Holly, both musically and thematically. She states, “While the stories behind these songs are personal to me, I hope that the message they convey inspires others on their own journey of self-discovery, resilience, and self-compassion”. Themes running throughout include heart to hearts with friends (‘Glow Up’), uncovering a new side of yourself (‘Open Ended’), looking after yourself (‘Give Yourself Love’) or just taking a walk in nature (‘The Water’). Focusing on how these little moments make all the difference in life, the EP is a celebration into the journey and the sense of relief that comes with choosing a path towards self compassion and love.
With this EP also comes a video release for unreleased track ‘The Water’. “This song is all about showing gratitude for the cleansing and transformative power of water. I wrote it in the shower and was reflecting on how water has this incredible ability to wash away the weight of the world”. You can watch the video for ‘The Water’ here.
Together with producer Luke Potashnick, she works at Wool Hall Studios in Frome, Somerset, which was previously owned by Tears for Fears during the recording of their Songs from the Big Chair album.
With her unique vocals and lyrical style drawing inspiration from electronic acts like Bjork and FKA Twigs as well as earthier artists like Joni Mitchell and Big Thief, she has crafted a sound that blends electronic elements with folk-pop sensibilities. Over the years, Holly and Luke’s collaboration has encouraged her to explore and evolve her songwriting style. While the stories behind these songs are personal to Holly, the messages conveyed can inspire others on their own journey of self-discovery, resilience, and self-compassion.
