Just two days after the debate, the Conservative party launched a spoof website purporting to be the Labour Party’s manifesto whilst attacking its pledges.
It is evident that the use of targeting algorithms and the use of misinformation in political advertising is a cause of concern, and in the wake of the 2016 US presidential campaign (post-Cambridge Analytica world) it is an issue that quickly needs to be resolved.
The Cambridge Analytica scandal is a prime example of a “full-service propaganda machine,” whereby the harvesting of millions of US Facebook profiles heavily impacted the 2016 US presidential election and swayed the Brexit referendum.
In 2014, the private data of over 85 million Facebook users fell into the hands of UK data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica. The firm had created an app that linked with Facebook whereby Facebook users’ personal information would be acquired through a personality quiz. The quiz was designed to harvest users’ data to target American voters with pro-Trump content in the run up of the 2016 presidential elections.
