Indie-Rock Band Olivia Valentine Releases New Single “My Records Back”

“Olivia Valentine's music is characterized by haunting vocals, driving beats, and soaring guitars with undeniable influences from their home in NOLA. The lyrics delve into themes of love, loss, and the search for meaning, and their live performances will be both energetic and emotionally charged.”

CRESCENT CITY SOUNDS

"Olivia Valentine’s adept craftsmanship shines through, inviting listeners into a sonic realm rich with emotive resonance and timeless allure."

LAST DAY DEAF

In New Orleans – undoubtedly one of America’s most beloved cities – the brass band has always been king. But once you weave your way through the second lines and street parties, you’ll find that the Big Easy has a diverse musical landscape. One band in particular is turning the spotlight on the city’s small but mighty Indie scene.

Olivia Valentine – founded by seasoned artists Phil Korosec and Geoff Hrabar – has emerged, like a swamp thing, as a musical force, with a sound that is driven by layered guitars, lush string arrangements, and accessible vocal melodies. Set to perform at the New Marigny Theater this fall, the band has just released it’s newest single, “My Records Back.”

Both the track and the video for “My Records Back” are out via all DSPs now.

“The song is based on a situation where I witnessed a group of scam artists on the EL train repeatedly rip off passengers with the ball and cup game,” shares Korosec, the band’s vocalist and lead guitarist.

“No one seemed to notice what an obvious grift it was. Although unintentional, this song is now a metaphor for the nonsense that many people believe and will fight you to the death to defend.”

Korosec was born in Cleveland. His family moved to St. Louis when he was five, and then to the UK when he was 12. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Korosec drew early influence from the constant loop of classic rock and metal that largely defined the 80s. But the music he discovered in the UK opened this narrow view. Eventually, Korosec began to study and appreciate jazz, and did a stint at the Berklee College of Music before deciding to enroll in film school at the University of New Orleans (UNO).

While attending UNO, Korosec worked part-time at a local coffeehouse, which is where he met Hrabar, a native New Orleanian and fellow musician. The two connected, forming both a friendship and a creative partnership that has lasted more than 30 years. Throughout the 90s, they played with their band Awkward on Land.

Korosec and Hrabar founded Olivia Valentine as a duo in 2017, primarily as a recording project. But as the project began to come alive, they decided to expand their lineup, which now includes Thomas Dietzel (guitar, backing vocals, keys, trombone, percussion), Larissa Dietzel (bass), and Daniel Bishop (drums, percussion). Olivia Valentine’s sound gives a tip of the hat to the Baroque-pop world (think Broken Social Scene), and is heavily influenced by bands like Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, and Sonic Youth.

In 2023, Olivia Valentine released their debut album, Reverberations, which elegantly showcases the band’s refreshing blend of Indie-Rock and Pop. Reverberations features Greg Wiz on drums. Wiz is known for his work with Norah Jones, The Autumn Defense, and Valerie June.

Olivia Valentine’s forthcoming album, The Couch Cushion EP, is set for release this fall. The band will perform at the New Marigny Theater on November 22.

“We are beyond excited about our current lineup,” says Korosec. “Rehearsals are a blast, and it's amazing to hear these tunes fully realized with the instrumentation they deserve. We can’t wait to perform for the people, in the city that we all love.”
