Contemporary singer-songwriter Darcy Toyn embraces self-discovery in captivating sophomore release “Orange”

Underlined with lucious vocals, frank lyricism, and sprinkled with an irresistibly chic aesthetic, contemporary soul newcomer Darcy Toyn is continuing to cement her one-to-watch status with her latest biopic single, “Orange”. Following on from her debut mark “June” [accumulating over 40K streams in 3 months independently] earlier this summer, the singer-songwriter has evoked a burgeoning anticipation across social media as supporters await her sophomore release. Accommodating a dreamscape laced with subtle guitar licks and live band elements courtesy of Sebastian Green, “Orange” narrates an honest portrayal of self-discovery as Darcy Toyn details the intricacies of her alter ego. Building a bridge of relatability through her unshielded and quirky penmanship, Darcy’s lilting toplines dance effortlessly around the ingenious instrumentation. Showcasing her studious tendencies as she draws from various genres including soul, jazz, R&B and alternative sounds, “Orange” houses an infectious hook and head-bobbing percussion that instantly leaves you wanting more.

Speaking on inspiration behind “Orange” Darcy Toyn explained, “Orange is about my alter ego, ‘Betty Boop’ who I step into when I’m performing. I began writing lyrics about who she is and realised that everything I was describing, I already was. But, I was either too scared or too naive to admit it. The song ended up becoming an ode to her and all the wit and edge she carries! The title ‘Orange’ came around as I was writing this song. I have met numerous spiritual people that have always told me that my aura was orange, and felt as though my energy was the colour orange. It’s always been a colour and mood that I resonate with so much, it was the perfect title for the record!”
