Alternative rising star Eden J Howells releases tongue in cheek social commentary track
London-based alternative folk rock rising star Eden J Howells announces the release of upcoming single, “I am whatever you want me to be”, out everywhere.
The track is the second single from their sophomore EP, set for release later this year, and marks a moment of growth for Eden in terms of its developing rock sound. Clad with a satirical aura, “I am whatever you want me to be” represents a push back against mainstream media, pop culture and late stage capitalist mindsets.
Naming the likes of Fontaines D.C and CMAT as key influences, Eden says: “I really wanted to step outside my comfort zone sonically with this track, because that’s kind of what the song represents. It’s a f*** you to the idea that the only way to be happy is to exist to please others, to be approved of. It’s a lot more rock influenced and loose than most of my previous work. And I’m obsessed. I spent so long beaten down by this pressure to assimilate, but I’m so over trying to mould myself to be palatable so that people like me. This song kind of solidified that for me. I’ll make the music I want to make. I’ll wear what I like, love who I like, do what I like.”
Eden’s debut EP, the fool, came out in October 2023 and has reached over 70,000 streams on Spotify, with the EP’s lead single, “nice enough” becoming a fan favourite and receiving support from fans across the world.
Now, the singer-songwriter is hard at work on their sophomore EP. This project is supported by Youth Music’s NextGen Fund. In addition to this support, Eden has received backing from Help Musicians over the years, including being a part of the Help Musicians Co-Pilot Mentoring scheme in 2023. Through this mentorship, Eden collaborated with industry professionals from the likes of Universal Music to refine their artistry.
Eden’s online presence has also played a vital role in their ascent. On TikTok, they’ve amassed over 16,000 followers and over 750,000 likes, using the platform to connect with fans and share the heart of their music. This engagement has cultivated a loyal and growing fanbase, drawn to Eden’s authenticity and deeply resonant sound.
Beyond their digital impact, Eden has built a strong reputation in the live music scene. They’ve played sold out headline shows at iconic London venues such as Strongroom and The Finsbury, and Doña. Known for their captivating energy and passionate performances, Eden has played to audiences of up to 400 people, leaving a lasting impression wherever they take the stage.
Eden has also taken an active role in fostering creativity and connection within their community. In April 2024, they founded Queer Creatives London, a collective that has become an integral part of their career as a queer artist. The collective has served as a platform for building community, meeting collaborators, and amplifying queer voices in the creative industries.
Their efforts have not gone unnoticed; they’ve been described by new music taste maker Jodie Bryant as a "really raw and unique talent." Eden was also a quarterfinalist in the Hot Vox New Blood competition for the chance to play the Isle of Wight Festival and is continuing to build their industry network —an exciting new chapter in their journey.
With their unwavering commitment to honesty and authenticity, Eden J Howells is an artist dedicated to exploring the complex universality of being human through their art. Their blend of self-released music, bold live performances, and an ever-expanding presence in the music world ensures that Eden’s impact will be both profound and enduring.
