Acclaimed alternative R&B singer, songwriter & artist Midi KwaKwa shares new EP ‘Moonflower’
Midi KwaKwa captivates audiences with her soulful, emotionally charged music, blending Neo Soul, Alternative R&B, and EDM. The multi-faceted singer, songwriter and visual artist announces the releases of her eagerly anticipated EP ‘Moonflower’, out everywhere now.
Inspired by icons like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Amel Larrieu, and Sade, Midi was born and raised by her Ghanaian parents in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. She proudly
celebrates her African heritage - her skin, texture, and culture - which vividly shapes her artistry and image.
On her new EP, Midi explores themes close to her heart - mental health, resilience, self-assurance, and the sensuality of femininity. Each track draws from personal encounters and reflections, capturing the dualities of love and sadness from the perspective of a blossoming Black woman. Moonflower embodies her growth, resilience, and the beauty of transformation through life’s challenging moments.
Midi’s recently released single, the powerful alternative R&B track ‘DiH’, explores the pain of letting go of toxic, unfulfilling relationships. It delves into themes of betrayal, revenge, and emotional exhaustion, with the title "DiH (Die)" cleverly playing off a repetitive chorus where love is symbolically put to rest.
‘Desire' explores the longing for deep, unconditional love born from the absence of it in Midi’s environment. This yearning leads to seeking connection in unfulfilling relationships, culminating in a struggle with depression. Switching it up again on ‘Let Me Be Your Vice’, this song delves into themes of sensual confidence and uninhibited desire, where intimacy becomes both an escape and a profound connection.
Closing track ‘Rosalina’ further showcases Midi’s versatility as an artist - an electronic, R&B fusion inspired by South African Amapiano, representing an alter-ego and embodying the darker aspects of her personality that she has to confront and transform. And those are just a few moments on a body work brimming with energy, surprises, pristine production and lyrical prowess.
Speaking of the EP, Midi says:
“Like other night flowers, the beautiful Moonflower uses the creatures of the night, such as moths and bats, to help with pollination. It is a night flower that needs the dark to grow and blossom. Seen as a symbol for the growth potential of our soul and personality when we are faced with challenging and difficult periods in our lives.
I have learned from all my experiences and that has allowed me to grow as a person. These encounters have shaped the foundation of a project where I address various themes, such as mental health and thoughts of despair, the yearning for love, self-assuredness, embracing the sensuality of femininity, both its uplifting and challenging aspects, and the emotions of love and sadness from the perspective of a blossoming black woman. This is the essence behind my project, named "Moonflower." I want each listener to discover their own unique song—a song that truly resonates with their heart and current state of mind. This project is my deeply personal journey of growth and transformation. It’s an alternative R&B experience infused with neo-soul, jazz, and electronic touches. Through raw, distorted guitars, soulful keys, warm guitar strings, synthesizers all brought to life by my voice. Each of the six songs unfolds a distinct soundscape and tells its own story, echoing the universal ups and downs we all face. My hope is that people feel understood, finding a part of their own story in mine, and realizing that “no matter what you go through, you are never alone.”
With her talent already earning her global recognition - in 2019, she was named one of Red Bull Music’s 17 Best Newcomers, and in 2020, she was crowned Best Performer at Curl Con in Berlin, sponsored by Beats by Dre - Midi is an undeniable star on the rise. Now signed with EMPIRE, Midi Kwakwa has solidified her place as an artist to watch.
