10 GREAT THINGS TO DO IN LONDON
By Nisha-Paris Murria
Due to the fact England celebrated ‘Freedom Day’ on 19th July, I thought this would be an appropriate time to recommend some great places to go to in London. So let’s get started, shall we?
Camden Art Centre
This gallery is perfect for people who love viewing contemporary art exhibits. It is situated in North London; perfect when you want to explore the Camden Food market or the stalls in and around Camden. Camden Arts Centre was established in 1965 and is housed in a former public library. This spot is perfect if you want to discover new artists, and the centre even has a lovely garden spot, book shop and café.
Beyond Retro
If you are walking back from Camden Art Centre, you may come across Beyond Retro, a retro clothing store. This is the flagship store, which means that you’ll get MAJOR DISCOUNTS. If you fancy a breather during your shopping, (as we all know that it can be tiring work), you can cool down by having refreshments which are served in vintage tea-sets. May your vintage clothing dreams come true.
Brixton Ritzy
If you’re a big movie buff, I definitely recommend going to Brixton Ritzy. Situated within South London at the Brixton Oval, you will see this large independent cinema, which is classed as one of the UK’s largest cinemas. The cinema has 5 SCREENS, yes, you heard that right 5, and two bars and a café!! You are going to be living your best life if you enjoy all of these things. It shows a variety of movies from the classics to the more contemporary and they even have late-night screenings.
However, they cater to everyone as they have a live venue for live music and comedy, so if you don’t feel like watching a film, but still want to get out, you know where to go.
Dennis Severs’ House
If you want to go somewhere for free, I recommend visiting this venue. Denis Severs was an American writer who lived in this house until his death; it’s a true time capsule as this Georgian house is situated in Spitalfields where it recreates the lives of immigrant silk-weavers between the 1724-1914. If you want to explore this Georgian masterpiece of a house and escape reality for a few hours by stepping back in time, this is your chance by exploring Dennis Severs’ House!
Spitalfields Market
Located in East London, this place is perfect for the foodie friend. It serves food and drinks from all over the world. You will always be able to try something new here, I can guarantee, from its family friendly restaurants to gourmet food trucks, who could resist visiting. It is literally a food heaven! I have always wanted to go to Humble Crumble, and I hope you go there too; (I hear it has one of the best crumbles)! So, if you are out and about and want to go for something to eat but can’t decide what, Spitalfields’s market is the place for you. Who knows you might even find a new favourite dish in there.
Sketch
If you’re meeting up with friends for brunch, tea, lunch or dinner then this is the place for you. Although I do have to warn you, it’s not the cheapest but the décor is FABULOUS. Think of Alice in Wonderland meets Laura Ashley, everything about this place is so whimsical and extravagant. An Instagram picture in the toilets is a MUST and if you’re only there for the day, I recommend having afternoon tea in the pink room, this will definitely be the cherry on top of a nice day trip away to London. If you want to visit, you need to book early, you’ll have to book early to avoid disappointment as it can get pretty busy, and the waiting list can be pretty long.
Spiritland
This place is perfect for music lovers as it’s a café and bar in one that houses one of the best sound systems in the world! It hosts events, gigs and sets from some of the best DJ’s and record collectors it even sells vinyl’s, books and musical equipment. After a fun weekend/day I would definitely come here to chill and listen to some of the best tunes.
Covent Garden
This is my favourite place in London, I love walking around the markets or sitting down for something to eat and casual strolling round the shops. Covent Garden is the place to go, no matter what the weather in London, from eating a picnic outside to eating ice-cream at one of my favourite hot-spots (Milk Train), this place is just right for everyone. It really is something special and a highlight when visiting London!
Notting Hill
How could I create a list of things to do in London without mentioning going to Notting Hill, the most vibrant and stylish place in London!!!! It is so insta worthy too with the brightly coloured houses, and it’s just such a nice calm place to make you feel at ease with yourself. I love Notting Hill, everything about it is so interesting, from the diversity, markets and cool and unique places to eat and drink, what’s not to love about Notting Hill?
Phoenix Garden
If you are tired out from all the exploring that you have done, why not go and relax at Phoenix Garden which is situated within Covent Garden. It’s a small and enclosed community garden which can be accessed through a number of different ways, (through alleyways). This garden is nice and peaceful and will get you relaxed for wherever your next venture takes you, it is so peaceful because it is designed to encourage wildlife; so, if you don’t mind hearing the beautiful sounds of birds and seeing nature at its best, this place is for you.
So, there you are, my top 10 things to do in London. Make sure you check them out, and remember to stay safe.
